Call of Duty UI Concepts
In redesigning the UI for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III, I've focused on simplifying the user experience to make the games more accessible for both new and returning players. By streamlining navigation, returning to vertical menus, and putting the emphasis on game variety, I aimed to lower the barrier-to-entry, allowing players to focus more on the combat and less on the interface.
Mastering the Gameplay should be the Barrier-to-Entry. Not the Menus.
Same Content, Better Layouts
A key element of my approach was to keep the existing UI elements of the game while improving usability. I wanted the concepts to stay in line with what could realistically happen to the game, not just a dream wishlist. By reworking typography, hierarchy, and layout elements, I was able to create a more cohesive and beautiful experience, one that respects both the legacy of the series and the expectations of a modern audience.
Inclusivity was another central focus of my redesign. I performed many accessibility audits in collaboration with community members of the game series, and ensured that I utilized feedback. Accessible design is good design — if a player cannot see the menus, it is doubtful that they will be able to have a positive experience within the gameplay.
The Impact
This project is ongoing. As a fan and player of video games, I make more concepts as I see a need. My work has been viewed by millions and has been featured on some of the most notable gaming websites, including GameSpot, PCGamer, and Dexerto. Very fortunately, my concepts have been seen by the people who need to see it most: the game developers. Since posting my first UI concept in 2022, almost all of my accessibility gripes in Warzone have been solved. Furthermore, game studios Sledgehammer Games and Treyarch have also taken amazing steps in adding accessibility settings to lower the barrier-to-entry for all gamers.
